The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is all about noticing the opportunities we have within our local community to help struggling people achieve better life outcomes. Our St. Mary/Christ the Teacher Conference includes the St. Mary and Christ the Teacher University Church parish boundaries within DeKalb County, Illinois. We are “A network of friends, inspired by Gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need.”
Established in 2004, our conference adheres to the Rule of St. Vincent de Paul, which calls us to be the hands and feet of Christ within our local community. We strive to serve God's people within the Northern DeKalb County communities of DeKalb, Sycamore, Cortland, Hinckley, Kirkland, Malta, Lee, and Waterman regardless of religious affiliation, race, sex, age, or social status.
Although we offer limited financial assistance for people who may be facing a temporary life crisis, like eviction or utility shut-off, our ultimate goal is systemic change and social justice that will enable all individuals to reach their full potential and lead productive and fruitful lives. One of the ways we do this is by compassionately listening to the people who come to us and helping them to apply their own creativity and life skills to the situations they want to overcome or the problems they encounter. We help them identify the underlying causes that may be affecting their life situations and assist them in directing their efforts toward solutions and resources that will be effective and lasting.
We place a high value on the inter-connections among the people within our community and our ability to care about one another as a means to achieve this goal. Every child needs love and attention, a warm place to call home, a chance to thrive and discover what gifts they bring to life and know they make a welcomed difference by being here and sharing their gifts. In collaboration with community churches, local agencies, businesses and people just like you we are making a difference. Thank you for understanding that your caring and financial support will make a tremendous impact for our struggling neighbors and the work we do.
Our usual programs include a weekly food pantry, but due to the Covid-19 crisis our pantry has been suspended until further notice. Our neighbor home visit program continues to assist those who may be experiencing a temporary financial setback or life crisis and are looking for the Christian compassion and caring our volunteers can offer during moments of such stress and anxiety.
